The Child and Youth Mortality Review Committee (CYMRC)

The Child and Youth Mortality Review Committee is established subject to sections 11 and 18 of the New Zealand Public Health and Disability Act 2000 ('the Act'). Specific provisions relating to mortality review committees are also given in Schedule 5 of the Act.

The role of committee is to review and report to the Minister on deaths of people aged between 4 weeks and 24 years, with a view to reducing the numbers of deaths of this group, for continuous quality improvement through the promotion of ongoing quality assurance programmes and advise the Minister on any other matters related to mortality that the Minister may require from time to time.

The Health Workforce Advisory Committee (HWAC)

The Health Workforce Advisory Committee (HWAC) is established under Section 12 of the New Zealand Public Health and Disability Act 2000. The role of the Committee is to advise the Minister of Health on health workforce issues that the Minister specifies by notice to the Committee.

Ministerial Advisory Committee on Complementary and Alternative Health (MACCAH)

The Ministerial Advisory Committee on Complementary and Alternative Health (MACCAH) was established in June 2001 under section 11 of the New Zealand Public Health and Disability Act 2000.
The purpose of the Committee is to advise the Minister of Health (who has delegated oversight to the Associate Minister, Hon Tariana Turia) on issues to do with complementary and alternative health, and specifically to provide advice in areas such as regulation, consumer information needs, research, and integration.

National Ethics Advisory Committee - the National Advisory Committee on Health and Disability Support Services Ethics (NEAC)

The National Advisory Committee on Health and Disability Support Services Ethics was established under section 16 of the New Zealand Public Health and Disability Act 2000, and its members were appointed in December 2001. The shortened name by which it is known is the National Ethics Advisory Committee ("the NEAC").

The NEAC's statutory functions are to provide advice to the Minister of Health on ethical issues of national significance regarding health and disability research and services, and to determine nationally consistent ethical standards and provide scrutiny for such research and services.

The objectives of ethics committees are to:

  • safeguard the rights of health and disability support service consumers and participants in health research and to protect them from harm

  • protect and promote the wellbeing of Maori and ensure mechanisms for Maori input into ethical review

  • ensure that the ethical aspects of health- and disability-related research are adequately considered

  • ensure that the ethical aspects of innovative procedures, both therapeutic and diagnostic, are adequately considered

  • foster awareness of ethical principles and practices within health and disability service providers, researchers and the community

  • consider any matter of ethics relevant to the delivery of health and disability services

  • facilitate the excellence of health and disability related research for the well being of society

  • give due consideration to both local and national community views and perspectives in ethical review, and assure the public that the above are being done.

The National Ethics Committee on Assisted Human Reproduction (NECAHR)

The National Ethics Committee on Assisted Human Reproduction (NECAHR) is established under sections 11 and 16(3) of the New Zealand Public Health and Disability Act 2000. The Committee's role is to review all research and innovative treatment proposals involving assisted human reproduction and to advise the Minister of Health on ethical issues relating to assisted human reproduction.

National Health Committee incorporating Public Health Advisory Committee

The National Health Committee was established by statute to advise the Minister of Health on the type and relative priorities of public health services, personal health services and disability services that it believes should be publicly funded. The committee is also required to advise on personal health and regulatory matters relating to public health. The committee formulates its advice in consultation with the public and health service providers.

Public Health Advisory Committee

The Public Health Advisory Committee is a sub-committee of the National Health Committee. Its role is to provide independent advice to the Minister of Health on public health issues including:

  • factors influencing the health of people and communities

  • the promotion of public health

  • the monitoring of public health.

The New Prescribers Advisory Committee (NPAC)

The New Prescribers Advisory Committee (NPAC) is a seventeen-member multidisciplinary committee. NPAC was established to assess applications for extending limited independent prescribing authority to new groups of health pracitioners in New Zealand.

The Committee provides recommendations to the Minister of Health
