Work Programme for the Ministerial Advisory Committee on Complementary and Alternative Health

Preparatory Stage

1. Develop Environmental Scan on Complementary and Alternative Health in New Zealand for Committee members

2. Develop Terminology paper on Complementary and Alternative Health for public release

Phase One - Documentation and Identification of the Policy Issues Regarding Complementary and Alternative Health

1. Development of a discussion document
A discussion document will be developed as background to the policy advice that will be prepared for the Minister of Health. It will include:

(a) a review of complementary and alternative health in New Zealand and overseas;

(b) identification of the policy issues in the areas covered in (a) above for public comment in the consultation phase.

2. Release of the discussion document on the website

3. Consultation on the discussion document
Comment will be invited on the document with respect to:
· technical accuracy
· appropriateness of the issues identified
· any other issues
· ways to resolve the issues.

4. Presentation of the policy issues document to the Minister of Health
The revised document will be publicly released after the Minister's approval.

Phase Two - Develop Advice for the Minister of Health

The Committee will develop advice and recommendations on complementary and alternative healthcare, and report to the Minister of Health. This advice will be in the following areas in line with the Committee's Terms of Reference:

  • Improving outcomes in the priority areas signalled in the New Zealand Health Strategy

  • Regulation

  • Consumer Information Needs

  • Evidence and Research

  • Integration


The stages that Phase Two will take are:

  1. Develop policy advice and recommendations

  2. Confirm advice through consultation

  3. Report to the Minister of Health on policy advice and recommendations (PDF file, 419 kB)

  4. Disseminate policy advice and recommendations.
